NSFW: Female Gaze

Group Exhibition at the Museum of Sex

Rebecca Goyette was featured in NSFW: Female Gaze, a groundbreaking group exhibition at the Museum of Sex showcasing the work of female-identifying artists who challenge and redefine the visual language of desire. Co-curated by Marina Garcia-Vasquez (VICE Media) and Lissa Rivera (Museum of Sex), the exhibition explored sex and sexuality through a lens that is raw, humorous, intimate, and unflinchingly honest.

Goyette’s contribution to the show centered on her 2008–2009 ceramic series DisFUNKtional Bride and Groom, a biting satire on heteronormative bridal culture. With works like Horsies and Butterflies Bride — a hand-built sculpture hiding a giant penis sex toy — and Junk Food Bride, which reveals a chaotic orgy within a seemingly innocent bowl, Goyette subverts expectations of purity, domesticity, and the cultural weight placed on the institution of marriage.

While often known for her provocative video and performance work, Goyette’s sculptures in NSFW underscore her mastery of form and her sharp critique of societal norms. By blending playful irreverence with radical commentary, her work pushes back against the sanitized narratives often imposed on women's sexuality, turning traditional symbols of matrimony inside out — quite literally.
